I discovered that I can do a watercolor pen and ink sketch in 1 to 2 hours. When I'm traveling, I can always fit that in! Places I've sketched include everywhere outdoors, in the car while it's pouring rain, beaches, airports, restaurants, parks, campgrounds, standing on street corners in historic "downtowns" and even on a ferry. I've sketched all over the country and it amazes me how I can do a painting from the most random small town and someone will come up to me and say I'm from there! I sometimes draw from photos but often these are created plein air - in the moment, while on the road.

I did this drawing on a visit to Australia. We were taking our daughter to snorkel/dive off the Great Barrier Reef (outside Cairns). I snorkeled a little but then stayed on the boat and did a sketch of the boat next to us. Never leave home without your drawing/painting tools.

Dancing Houses of Amsterdam
